[Capensis]

It'd be great to share, always up for more reading material (and I'm sure other people, too). Feel free to tell us why, as well.

Some of mine are:

The Yellow Wallpaper - Creepy and dark (especially the ending), but interesting as the main character progressively spirals into madness.

The Scarlet Ibis - ;______________;

Any short story written by Jorge Luis Borges, with the theme being "infinity". They're a pretty good read, especially "The Library of Babel" (naming a trope on its own), and "The book of Sand". Will leave you with a headache after reading them, but they're fun to read.

Sort of reminds me of this one short story I read (I don't remember the name, but I'll ask the person who showed me it) where this supercomputer evolves into an all-knowing program and becomes the center of human life.

Franz Kafka's Before the Law. It's actually from one of his larger works (The Trial), but I guess people thought it was good enough to add it by itself in his short story collection.

Basically, this short story is set in medieval in the time of the Plague. People who were uninfected sought refuge at one of the neighboring castles. They decided to have a party in the castle for the uninfected to keep their spirits up. So throughout the castle there were many rooms with different colors, but I'm not going to bother explaining each of the rooms and go with the one that it's actually set in, which is the black room with red windows, and a death clock that rings every hour.

Anyway, there's not much to this story other than the really cool masked guy that comes near the end. The masked guy apparently wasn't supposed to be there, even though it was a masquerade party. So their security tries to get him out of the castle. When they try to get him out of the castle, they die just about instantaneously. For readers who are looking for symbolism, the masked man would be the Plague. The theme here also is that they could not escape the disease that put them in their caged castle in the first place. It was only a matter of time, I guess.

I am actually a huge fan of Asimov short stories in general.

I haven't read a whole lot of short stories (with the exception of Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes non-novels, but those were all serials so I don't believe they count), but of the few I did read, the one I remember most with the greatest fondness was The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell.
