Happy New Year from me doujinstyle!

Also, since I'm not pro at art, any comments and criticisms are welcome and appreciated!


I never got around to painting Cirno, haven't gotten any good paint recently low on cash haha

Specs:
6.5 feet tall
Black and white OSH spray paint.
Tips- orange fat, skinny pro, osh standard tip

Just wondering - Do you own these walls? Other than that, nice works. Now that's some diversion to all these ugly, unrecognizable name and "clan" tags.

Well the thing about graffiti, the people that do it don't own these walls. So art or not, it's against the law. But personally I think its fine, because it looks nice. I only find it wrong if it is something like gangsigns or profanity, or if it is done in clean towns where such things don't want to be seen.

Just wanted to say, I like your art although I'm usually not approving of spraying on random walls. I guess, it doesn't matter in that context, seeing how they are already sprayed up where you made that graffiti.

You are both correct, this isn't an abandoned building though it's an underground waterway, really fun exploring them too!

I do a mix of both though, so I also do property damage sometimes.

Isn't there a place for that, anyway? There should be. It might greatly reduce the spray tags in the city in best cases.

I would consider only a small part of those graffitis as art. Most seem to be nametags really, often just put with some black pen. Yes it is vandalism and in most cases not amusing nor good looking. Problem is the missing respect for the architecture which is art in itself and the property of others that gets painted. For example school buildings. No matter how professional a school, there will always be those tags on the walls due to young people breaking into schools and these vandalized walls always contribute to a negative feeling of teachers and students. Same for the rest of the city.

And then there is the part where sprayers often don't even respect the work of other sprayers. How many pictures / tags get oversprayed by another with different colors just to ruin it? Art in my eyes is not only creating art, but also respecting and not destroying those of others. That's why you took pictures of your creations, too. I bet the Reimu spray in your signature is at least oversprayed by 2 other nametags or something by now. :/


Last but not least, there is one more complaint from me towards this mentality - Many sprayers don't even halt before historical buildings and monuments and that is the part where it really gets me. So we live in a city with approximately millions of walls, you would think that sprayers would then at least leave buildings of greater symbolism alone like old castles, museums or national theaters... Nope, mistaken. Apparently, a lot get a kick out of just ruining it for everyone and tagging up memorials about wars, slaughterfests, great historical moments of a country, etc.

I remember a case a few months back in my country when a castle that was located in a park was cleaned. There was a long wall around the thing, so the mayor of my city back then made a public comment stating if sprayers really had that urge to spray it up that badly, they might as well take the wall instead of the building itself. Well, apparently three days later the castle was tagged up again. End of the story? There are now several guards in front of the castle at all times and no one can go near the building without being watched and taped by security cameras... And that's why that stuff agitates me. Not only the disrespect related to spraying, but also the short-sighted acts that ruin it for everyone in the end. I hope you are not one of these and just use walls and buildings that are abandoned already anyway.

Just like Youmu and Reimu those look great. I wish I would see a Touhou character sprayed on a wall in my town. Closest I found was a badly drawn random anime girl in an underground passage years ago

You bring up many great points about the atrocities of graffiti, I know many writers that do things like disrespect monuments, historical places, and other pieces of art. There's sort of a dichotomy within the writing community, some paint/write/wheatpaste as an art they would enjoy going out of their way to find small meccas for graffiti others enjoy vandalism in its purest form to destroy and bomb cities.

Although I know you oppose the latter I believe there is a balance between the two. Whenever you finish a piece you feel an immense amount of pride or some form of gratification it's the thought of "I just did that". Thus the more elaborate a piece is done or the hotter the spot where you are painting is the better the reward. I'm describing it kind of badly but it's hard to explain it's more of an experience. Either way most of the ugly tags you see where they disrespect other pieces or things that don't need graffiti to spruce up its image are normally toys. You normally won't see well respected or talented writers doing these kind of things.

Like I said graffiti is still a crime, I'm just rationalizing but I understand why many people have a problem with it and that's just the way it's gonna be. There's also a very fine line between acceptable and unacceptable graffiti which lies within the eyes of the affected society.
