Type-Moon didn't become a real company until the release of Fate/Stay Night. Melty Blood's first expansion was ReAct. It wasn't until Act Cadenza that it finally left the doujin scene.

Netplay seems to be broken in general. My guess is because we're running cracked versions. I tried to have a friend connect with me and we errored out when attempting to connect. Also because mediafire was having issues with the netplay patch, here's a MU link to the patch.

Tried again. This time i ran the setup without extracting it. It opens a directx download thing which didn't show up when i ran setup after extracting first. Seems to have worked.

Someone test this:

Once you get the error, move all of the files from the install directory to someplace else without closing the error window and close it afterward. Apparently it might not delete the game files and might still work.

EDIT: Just tested it myself. It works.
