Society likes to say that video games cause violence and desensitizes our thoughts towards violence. Well, yes and no. Children do get ideas from it, but what are they doing playing it anyways? The parents are the ones who are responsible. Our sensitivity towards violence is degrading from the mass media alone, yet often in court cases or questioning it is easy to blame video games. They feel that video games are simulations that breed serial killers and instigate school shootings. Often times people fail to realize the upbringing of the convict, the mass media, the social environment, etc.
Now, before this turns into a whole social psychology thread, lets bring it back.
Video games are great past times, we can do the impossible and improve (or worsen) our mood. Do you guys feel that it may change how someone may view life? Given that, even if we do not apply what we learn in video games to life, will it change how we take on certain tasks?
Let the discussion begin.

This is subliminally teaching your children that they need to go in their rooms, demon whack their sin staff and produce sin milk into their hands and than fling it in the face of the first person they come in contact with after their taint tugging session.

I know, I know, this topic is a bit.. vague. So allow me to shed some light.
Video games are so common that they have found their ways in many of our lives, we've categorized ourselves as casual or hardcore. Some of us spend a quarter or half of our day. When we could be doing something labeled more productive, we resort to these. There is a reason for everything, so what is yours?

Probably 1-4 hours a day. There's some days where I don't actually play video games, I just sit on MSN, merely TALKING about video games. Which I seem to like more than actually playing them.
I suppose the third question means "could you go on without multiplayer games?". I'd say I could.

Went with adventure because the Zelda franchise is one of my favorites and SotC is perhaps the best game I've ever played. I honestly spend less time on this genre because other games (like Fallout) take a lot longer to beat, but I definitely think and daydream the most about adventure titles.

An interesting subject has been brought up: "Time management"; yes, time is indeed valuable and irreplaceable. Though, most would treat it as expendable. Now, it is not up to me or the person next to you to dictate how that this unreliable resource should be spent, however, would you look back and ever have regrets?
Video games are a fine example of a time dump, it is no different from reading a book or watching television.
But look at it this way, if we had no video games or other simulations of such, how would our time be spent? Would we have been more productive? What would have been in-place of that time gap? It is interesting and you can be honest or lie to yourself, but just think about how much time you may have spent on video games.
Remember, there is no such thing as "wasted time". All time spent, even if undesirable, has been used for the advancement of something else.

I've been in the Starcraft scene since the Brood War era. Then I came across Touhou EoSD and fell for it. The music is really what got to me though >.>

For example I like that I have played all the Jak and Daxter games. I had fun with them, fond memories of those games, and good knowledge of the games. Though these things don't serve much purpose right now for me other than that.
on the other hand me being here is also a time dump. I am really bored right now though.

I like to try and use my time I spent with games though, I use them mostly for inspiration or clearing my mind from a problem I can't solve for a moment, so I might try from a different angle at a later time.

Last I checked, most people were playing Skyrim these days. That includes the "general population."

Typically it's an MMO or at least online co-op but as long as it's on PC I have Skype so I play single-player stuff from time to time.
Although I must say that out of the example RPGs I've only ever played Persona and that isn't really my favorite. Not a huge fan of JRPGs as a whole, not that I particularly dislike them either.
And lastly, why the flying fuck is this in 18+?
